To the Moon and beyond: Airbus delivers powerhouse for NASA's Orion spacecraft
Europe’s Airbus delivered the “Powerhouse” that will be used in NASA’s new Orion Spaceship. The spacecraft is heading to NASA’s Kennedy space center in Florida before a three-week mission orbiting the moon in 2020. This is great news for the industry. Future production of Orion and the European module could result in billions of dollars of new orders for suppliers.
Connecticut Adds Manufacturing Jobs at Fastest Rate in Decades
New data released by MNI (Manufacturers' News, Inc.) show that Connecticut has added more new manufacturing jobs over the last 12 months than it has in decades. This is great news. In fact, Connecticut added 3,153 manufacturing jobs between June 2017 and June 2018. This is the state’s 3rd-straight year of gains. Defense spending has driven orders for transportation equipment which is creating demand for these jobs. However, the tight labor market is still making it tough for manufacturing companies to find talent in the area.
Foxconn Considers Bringing Chinese Workers to Wisconsin as U.S. Labor Market Tightens
Connecticut isn't the only state facing a shortage of manufacturing workers. The state of Wisconsin reached a record low unemployment rate this year of 3.0%. Wisconsin’s jobless rate is significantly below the national average at 3.7%. The Wall Street Journal reports that Foxconn is considering bringing in personnel from China to fill these roles. Foxconn says it cannot find enough engineers and skilled applicants to staff their new facility in southern Wisconsin.
